Your boiler is probably something that you don’t think much about – until it goes wrong, that is. We get this question all the time from our customers; after all, a brand-new boiler can be expensive, is this something you really need? We discuss four ways that you can tell it’s time to upgrade.

Frequent repairs

A boiler in good working condition should not require servicing more than the recommended one time a year. If you find that you are having to call an engineer out more than this, it is probably worth calculating how much you have been spending on repairs and if this is greater than the potential cost of a new boiler.

Your energy bills have crept up

If you have noticed your energy bill creeping up without explanation, it may be because your boiler is not very energy efficient. Boiler energy efficiency is rated from A through G. A G-rated boiler only works at below 70% efficiency, whilst an A-rated boiler has an energy efficiency of 90% or above.

Upgrading from a grade G boiler to a grade A boiler could save you as much as £200 a year, so if you have an old boiler with a poor energy efficiency rating, it is definitely worth considering a replacement.

Replacement parts are rare and expensive

The older your boiler is, the rarer and more expensive it can be to source replacement parts should it need repair. It may well be more economical for you to consider replacing your boiler instead if the cost of upkeep is too steep. Whilst you may decide to replace the faulty parts this once, a boiler in its twilight years (over 10 years old) won’t last forever; often it makes more sense to take this opportunity to replace your boiler.
