Count on the South’s Go-To Choice for Sewage Treatment Plant Installations

Like a septic tank, a sewage treatment plant is a wastewater treatment system designed to process sewage from properties that aren't linked to a central sewage system. These systems are often used in rural or remote areas where connecting to a main sewer system isn't an option.

Unlike a septic tank, however, a sewage treatment plant does more than just separate waste – it treats it for contaminants. This means that the water leaving a sewage treatment plant is much cleaner than what comes out of a septic tank, and you can legally discharge it straight to a local watercourse.

Thanks to their mechanical components, sewage treatment plants depend on a consistent source of electricity to operate, while septic tanks don't.

If you're looking to upgrade from a septic tank or install an entirely new system, the team at Greenstar are here to help! Domestic Sewage Treatment Plant Design, Supply, and Installation

Wondering how our installation process typically unfolds? Let us break it down for you:

  1. We'll begin by assessing your property, taking into account any existing sewage treatment or septic tank systems. We'll then work closely with you to design a setup that not only meets your current needs but also accounts for any future requirements.
  2. Once we've nailed down the design, our skilled technicians will move onto the installation itself. This involves tasks like excavation, laying a solid foundation, positioning the system, connecting the pipes, and setting up the electrical components – all carried out with care and a keen eye for detail.

Sewage Treatment Plant FAQs

A sewage treatment plant is a decentralised system designed to treat wastewater generated by households or businesses. It removes impurities and contaminants from domestic sewage before releasing it into the environment.

Sewage treatment plants are necessary if your home is unable to connect to the central sewage line. They’re also essential for environmental protection – they treat wastewater to a level where it’s safe to be discharged into water bodies or reused for non-potable purposes, reducing pollution and protecting public health.

  • Sewage is collected from a property and flows into the treatment plant through gravity or pump systems.
  • Large debris and solids are removed. This is done using screens or bar racks to prevent these materials from damaging downstream equipment.
  • Sewage then undergoes physical treatment to remove settleable solids and oils. It takes place in a primary sedimentation tank, where the flow velocity is reduced to allow heavy solids to settle at the bottom as sludge, while lighter materials like grease and oil float to the surface and are skimmed off.
  • The partially clarified wastewater then enters the secondary treatment phase. Organic matter and dissolved pollutants are further broken-down using microorganisms like bacteria and other biological agents.
  • Before the treated water is released into natural water bodies or reused, it’s often disinfected to kill any remaining harmful bacteria, viruses, and pathogens.
  • After all treatment stages are complete, the final effluent is either discharged into a receiving water body or reused for purposes such as irrigation, industrial processes, or non-potable uses like flushing toilets.

Typically, a sewage treatment plant includes primary treatment tanks, secondary treatment tanks, settling tanks, aeration systems, and disinfection units. Some systems may also have sludge treatment components.

Yes. While both septic tanks and sewage treatment plants treat wastewater, septic tanks primarily separate solids from liquids, whereas treatment plants employ more advanced processes to treat sewage to a higher quality standard.

Treated wastewater from a sewage treatment plant can be reused for non-potable purposes like irrigation, flushing toilets, and washing cars. However, the level of treatment may need to be higher for certain applications.

Yes! Sewage treatment plants help reduce the environmental impact of sewage discharge by treating the wastewater before it enters natural water bodies. This protects aquatic ecosystems and water quality.

If well maintained, a modern sewage treatment plant can last for many years before needing replacement. The exact lifespan depends on factors like design, quality of components, and maintenance.
