Septic Tank FAQs

A septic tank is an underground, watertight container designed to treat and dispose of wastewater from a building's plumbing system. It’s a common method of wastewater treatment for properties that can’t be connected to a centralised sewer system.

Although each system is slightly different, all septic tanks follow a similar process. Here’s an overview of how they work:

  1. Wastewater from the building's toilets, showers, and sinks flows into the septic tank via pipes.
  2. Inside the tank, solid waste sinks to the bottom and forms a layer called sludge, while lighter materials like oil and grease float to the top, forming a layer called scum. The remaining liquid wastewater, known as effluent, is situated between the layers of sludge and scum.
  3. Bacteria in the tank break down the solid waste in an oxygen-deprived environment. This natural process, known as anaerobic digestion, decomposes the organic matter in the sludge, converting it into gases, liquid, and a smaller amount of residual sludge.
  4. The liquid effluent, which is relatively clarified and treated by the anaerobic digestion process, exits the septic tank and enters the drain field (also called a leach field or absorption field). The drain field consists of a network of perforated pipes or chambers buried in the soil. The effluent gradually seeps into the soil, where further biological and chemical processes help filter and purify the water before it returns to the groundwater.

Septic tanks are usually installed on homes and buildings that aren’t connected to a centralised sewer system. Their main purpose is to treat, store, and dispose of wastewater in a relatively simple and effective way, without having to be connected to the main sewage system.

A septic tank is typically located underground on a property, often in the back garden. Its exact placement can vary based on local regulations, soil conditions, and the layout of the property.

In general, a tank will be situated at a distance from the house, usually downhill and away from any water sources such as wells, rivers, or lakes, to minimise the risk of contamination.

In most cases, you’ll need to get planning permission when installing a new septic tank on your property. If you're looking to replace an existing septic tank, however, planning permission is typically not required.
