It’s Gas Safety Week!
From 16th – 22nd September 2019, we are promoting Gas Safety Week in order to help you understand the importance of regularly checking your gas appliances.
This year’s Gas Safety Week raises awareness of the dangers of poorly installed or maintained gas appliances, including gas leaks, fires, explosions and deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s all too easy to take the safety of your home or business’ gas appliances, our boilers, fireplaces, ovens etc., for granted, especially when they appear to be working effectively. However, complacency is dangerous which is why Gas Safety Week is incredibly important in reminding us of the consequences of ignoring the potential dangers of gas.
Some Gas Safety Tips
This week is the perfect time to check your gas appliances are working as they should be. If you’re at all unsure of what to look for, or you discover something is wrong, don’t hesitate to call a Gas Safe registered engineer for an expert opinion. Chances are that it’s nothing serious, but can you really afford to take that risk?
To help you take part in Gas Safety Week, we’ve put together a few tips for ensuring you and your family stay safe all year round.
- Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to install, fix and maintain your gas appliances – and check their Gas Safe Register ID card when they arrive.
- Get all your gas appliances checked and serviced every year. If you rent, ask your landlord for a copy of their gas safety record.
- Don’t attempt to fix or maintain your gas appliances yourself as this can prove fatal. Always call a reliable Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Invest in a carbon monoxide alarm and test it’s working once a month, along with your fire alarm.
- Familiarise yourself with the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning; headache, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, confused behaviour and loss of consciousness.
- Look out for warning signs your gas appliances aren’t working properly; gas light is yellow instead of blue, black marks around gas appliance and unusual levels of condensation.
