One of the biggest expenses for any home is the heating bill. Follow our top tips for simple changes you can make to help you save on your energy spending – great news for you and the environment.

Place foil behind your radiators

As bizarre as this may seem, placing tin foil behind your radiators will help stop hot air escaping through your walls and reflect it back into the room. You can use the stuff you find in your kitchen cupboards or buy large sheets designed for this specific purpose.

Keep your curtains closed

Your windows are one of biggest areas where hot air can seep out of your home. A simple yet effective way to help prevent this from happening is to keep your curtains, blinds or shutters closed.

Keep your curtains open

Despite the advice from the previous tip, there are exceptions to every rule. If you’re lucky enough to have windows that get a lot of direct sunlight, keep your curtains open to let the sun heat the room for you.

Don’t close your oven

Once you’ve finished cooking up a culinary feast in your oven, rather than shutting the door and leaving it to cool down, wasting the energy inside, keep the door open. The lovely warm air the oven has generated will escape into your kitchen and heat it up instantly.

Cover hard floors with rugs

Hard flooring is no doubt attractive but in the colder weather it can become incredibly cold to walk on. Simply placing a rug over it will help keep your feet toasty warm and prevent heat escaping through the floor.

Wrap up warm

Of course, one of the simplest ways to keep warm when you’re at home is to wrap up in layers of clothing. A big, fluffy dressing gown and soft slippers are great ways to keep warm while staying comfortable.

Block cold drafts

If you have gaps underneath your doors, you’ll surely have felt the cold draft that wafts in from underneath them. To stop this chilly air getting in, block the gaps under your doors with draft excluders. These are relatively cheap to buy, or you can make your own with an old pair of tights and unwanted clothing.

Invest in a hot water bottle

An oldie but a goldie for a reason. A hot water bottle will give you instant heat that you can carry around with you. If you hate climbing into cold sheets at the end of the day, place one in your bed shortly before you go to sleep.

Uncover radiators

Large furniture placed in front of a radiator will block and/or absorb most of the heat released, no matter how much foil you’ve put behind it. So, if possible, move the furniture from in front of the radiator to let the warm air circulate to the rest of the room.

Install a smart meter

Smart thermostats give you complete control over your heating by only warming rooms you are using. They also let you keep an eye on how much energy you’re using so you can reign in the spending if you need to.
